7 Days of Self Care - Day three: Setting some gentle goals

Let's face it - right now we're all pretty flatlined by the endless lockdowns, home schooling, and trying to keep our business afloat. Now is not the time for all the big, hairy, audacious goals.  We're going to require a different approach in a very different world.

It’s still important to set goals, but you likely need to think differently about timeframe, and significance.

There's nothing wrong with having some smaller, bite-sized goals - as long as they are within your scope to achieve, Goal setting helps to trigger new behaviours, allowing us to maintain focus (when unpredictable things happen) and giving you a surge of motivation when you make progress.

Start by focussing on what's achievable right now, and what isn't going to burden you or drain your time, money or energy further.  It's all about taking baby steps!

Set yourself small, bite-sized tasks that aren't overwhelming, and try to achieve 1 thing per day at first, until it becomes habit and doesn't require too much thinking.

After a few days, maybe add another small goal to the mix and see how that feels. It could be something as simple as making sure you drink 2 litres of water a day, trying a new thing, setting up a sleep routine, going for a walk, doing some yoga every day, or cutting down on sugar.

Some examples of small goals you could consider-

  • Move your body every day for 30 minutes

  • Eat well most days

  • Pick your favourite vegetable to learn a new healthy recipe with it

  • Go meat-free one night a week

  • Try meal prepping or cooking a new recipe once a month.

  • Get more rest

  • Commit to cleaning up your inbox/ hard drive/ desktop/ phone broswer

  • Video call a friend or loved one once a fortnight

  • Write a letter to a loved one

  • Learn about a new topic through a podcast

  • Set yourself a fitness goal (learn to do a proper push up)

  • Do an at-home dance choreography class (do it online)

Reminder: it's totally OK to not be slaying right now

Remember you’re doing your best during a very difficult time. Cut yourself some slack. You don't have to be smashing life or achieving huge things right now. If you've managed to get out of bed and shower today, you're doing really damn well!

Parents especially should remind themselves that these are unprecedented times. There’s no playbook for this!

Avoid burnout by setting realistic expectations and giving yourself grace if you can’t meet them.

Practice forgiveness and self-compassion.  Being compassionate to ourselves when we feel inadequate makes us feel safe and cared for, like a child held in a warm embrace.

And if something seems too much of a drain on your time or energy? Don't be afraid to put it to one side (I'm looking at you reels, tik tok, social media in general).

If it's not important, doesn't bring joy, or isn't going to have a positive impact on your day/ energy/ time, it might be a good idea to put it in the fuck it bucket for now.

Your energy is a precious resource; remember that when thinking about what you want to achieve right now.

At Killer Queen, I love to focus on self love, self care and empowerment as a HUGE part of my brand values.

I bang on quite a lot about self love and self care because I know firsthand how important it is to take care of you- and the vital importance of “filling our own cup” first, before taking care of others.

I'm here to remind you that your life, your energy, your power, your time- has value. It's time to RECLAIM IT.

After months of running on empty and being in survival mode, it's time to love yourself more and begin to THRIVE once again.

I take a bold stand for women owning their throne and reclaiming their confidence, and I want you to come out the other side of this pandemic feeling stronger and more resilient than ever, and royally loving who you are.

Get ready for a dose of radical self love and care. The kind that will hopefully make you feel like you're on top, rather than sinking.
